The Pittsburgh Penguins and the entire hockey world mourns the death of legendary broadcaster Mike Lange, who passed away yesterday at age 76. He first came to Pittsburgh for the 1974 season, left after one year, then returned for good in ’76, remaining the voice of Penguins hockey until his retirement for health reasons in 2021.
Lange was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 when he received the Foster Hewitt Award from the NHL Broadcasters Association.
Mario Lemieux issued a statement in which he said it was an honor to have Lange call virtually every goal of his career. Lemieux said, “Mike was one-of-a-kind broadcaster, a tremendous ambassador for the city of Pittsburgh, and most importantly, a great friend. He will be missed.”
The Athletic’s Josh Yohe wrote that he spoke with Sidney Crosby last night and Crosby was taking the news of Lange’s passing “pretty hard.”
