Pirates pitchers and catchers report to Bradenton next Wednesday as Spring Training gets underway.
Meanwhile, the Bucs yesterday announced a number of staff promotions and appointments, including the promotion of Michael Chernow to director of coaching and player development, which places him in charge of the Pirates’ minor league teams. Previous director John Baker was promoted to vice president of performance. The Pirates have also lured Mike Voltmer from the Dodgers to take over as vice president of pro evaluation and strategy.

- Todd Tomczyk promoted to senior director of sports medicine.
- Trey Rose promoted to director of baseball operations.
- Will Lawton reassigned to special assistant of player evaluation.
- Max Kwan named vice president of international scouting, returning to the Pirates organization after working for agent Scott Boras.
- Jeremy Bleich promoted to director of pitching development.
- Kevin Tenenbaum comes from the Cleveland Guardians to become vice president of baseball research and development.

Slugger Pete Alonso is returning to the Mets on a two-year $54 million contract with an opt-out after one year. Since his debut in 2019, he’s hit 226 home runs, second to Aaron Judge’s 232 over the last six seasons.
