The Penguins continue to sink in the west, last night falling to the worst team in hockey, the San Jose Sharks. Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Penguins didn’t work hard enough, especially considering that they’re in last place in the Metro Division.
The Penguins had two other prime chances to scored in the third period, but Drew O’Connor was stopped on a penalty shot and a deflected goal by Michael Bunting was disallowed after a San Jose coach’s challenge resulted in a goaltender’s interference call against Anthony Beauvillier.
Asked about the reversal, Sullivan was terse.
Evgeni Malkin was placed on injured reserve before the game with an unspecified injury. Sullivan said he is “week to week”. Jesse Puljujarvi was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take Malkin’s roster spot. Forward Blake Lizotte missed his third straight game due to illness.
The Fenway Sports Group confirmed an ESPN report that it is considering selling a minority share of the Penguins. Fenway would retain controlling interest in the team.
The Pens close their seven-game road trip at Utah tomorrow night.
