Already missing forwards Bryan Rust and Blake Lizotte, the Penguins lost a game and two more forwards were injured in Seattle yesterday.
Evgeni Malkin was injured in the first period and Nieto left the game in the third period. Rust suffered an undisclosed injury on Thursday in Anaheim and Lizotte was absent due to illness.
Also yesterday, the Penguins sent promising defenseman Owen Pickering to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, with coach Mike Sullivan explaining that while he played well early in his 25-game stint in the NHL, Pickering’s progress had diminished lately, which he said is common with young players getting their first experience in the NHL.
Two more games remain in the Penguins’ seven-game road trip. They will play in San Jose on Monday night and in Utah on Wednesday night. They are 2-3 on the trip so far.
