Both Pennsylvania Senators have signed a letter to new Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging him to use any and all tools to bring Marc Fogel home from Russia.
Fogel, an IUP alumnus and Pennsylvania native, was imprisoned in Russia in August of 2021 after authorities found about half an ounce of legally-prescribed medicinal marijuana in his luggage at an airport in Moscow. He was sentenced to 14 years in a Russian penal colony. In December, Rubio’s predecessor Anthony Blinken declared Fogel was a “wrongfully detained” person. The designation brings with it significant resources for the family, including medical care, mental health services and financial support.
Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick joined 11 congressmen, including Guy Reschenthaler, whose district includes IUP, in making the request of Rubio. Fogel has been in prison now for nearly four years.
