Mike Tomlin says he’s already working on next season for the Steelers after their playoff exit on Saturday, downplaying speculation that he will leave the team by either quitting or getting traded. He has a no-trade clause in his contract.
At his end-of-season news conference yesterday, Tomlin said he shares Steelers fans’ frustration over another first-round playoff loss and says he doesn’t make excuses for failure, he owns it and feels he’s capable of reversing it.
Tomlin says a season may end abruptly, but then you start writing a new story.
The coach says he’s already planning for next year…as a Steeler.
Tomlin says the team has already held meetings to discuss the quarterback situation, after the expiration of the contracts of all three of this season’s QBs.
Tomlin is the longest-tenured coach in the NFL, with 18 seasons in Pittsburgh. Baltimore’s John Harbaugh ranks second, in his 17th year with the Ravens.
The Steelers signed 17 players to reserve/futures contracts yesterday, including former Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson. Eleven of the signees spent at least a part of this past season on the Steelers’ practice squad and nine of them were on it at the end of the season. One player was with the Steelers in training camp last season. Four others in addition to Thompson were with other NFL teams this past season, mostly on their practice squads.
