State police released the statistics for the New Year’s holiday driving period.
Troopers across the state were out in full force between December 31st and January 2nd. During that time, troopers investigated 425 crashes, an increase from the 336 crash investigations last year. Of those crashes, only one person was killed and 68 people were hurt. Impaired driving was a factor in 31 of the crashes. Police also made 254 DUI arrests, issued 2,727 speeding tickets, 383 seat belt citations, 50 tickets for child safety seat violations, and 10,098 other tickets. The fatal crash was reported in Troop N, which covers Columbia, Carbon, Monroe and part of Luzerne counties, but details were not released.
For troop A, which covers most of Indiana and Westmoreland Counties and all of Cambria and Somerset counties, troopers investigated 22 crashes, eight of them were DUI crashes. Seven people were hurt. 17 people were arrested for DUI, 98 speeding tickets were issued. 13 seatbelt citations were handed out along with 2 child seat citations. 86 seat belt warnings were issued. 391 other tickets were handed out and troopers in Troop A made 20 “self-initiated” arrests.
These statistics are for state police-investigated incidents only and do not include incidents where other law enforcement agencies responded.
