Another milestone night for Sidney Crosby, and an important Metro Division win for the Penguins. Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Coach Mike Sullivan is running out of words to describe Sidney Crosby.
Sullivan says the Penguins’ power play is clicking because of their better entry plays and their willingness to battle in front of the net.
The coach says the Penguins have found a good balance between opportunity and risk with the puck.
Sidney Crosby’s record 1,034th career assist came in his 1,310th game. As Crosby pointed out last week, Lemieux played only 915 games in his career. Crosby is humbled to be included in the list of Penguins’ greats.
The win put the Penguins in possession of the final Eastern Conference playoff slot, but only temporarily. With a 17-16-5 record, they have 39 points. Ottawa beat Minnesota 3-1 last night and the Senators have 40 to hold the second Wild Card spot in the East. Crosby says they will have to work to keep in contention.
Crosby says the win, coming off Saturday’s loss on Long Island, shows the grit of the Penguins.
Defenseman Kris Letang missed the game with an unspecified lower body injury suffered Saturday in New York. He joined fellow defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Owen Pickering on the sidelines. Pettersson appears on the verge of returning to the lineup and is cleared for contact. He has a lower body injury. Pickering is out with a concussion. Nate Clurman made his NHL debut in Letang’s place and took a regular shift on the blue line last night.
The Penguins have canceled their practice today. They play in Detroit tomorrow night.
