Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection has awarded over $19 million for eight abandoned mine land restoration projects, including one in Indiana County.
The money comes from the Abandoned Mine Lands and Acid Mine Drainage Grant Program. Pennsylvania has rehabilitated over 151,000 acres of abandoned coal mine land across the state, and with the federal funding recently distributed, that work will continue. The funding was awarded through a Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which has invested over $700 million into reclamation projects since 2022.
In Indiana County, $241,989 was awarded for the Laurel Run #2 project. The funds will help complete project development and design work required to rehabilitate the abandoned mine drainage passive treatment system in Brush Valley Township.
