The Penguins lead was only 3-2 heading into the third period in Montreal last night, but then the offense broke open the game in their most lopsided win of the season. Paul Steigerwald has the recap.
Coach Mike Sullivan says Tristan Jarry’s play in the net kept the Penguins alive before the offensive explosion.
The Penguins were 2-for-3 on the power play while the penalty killers were spotless, stopping all four Montreal opportunities.
Sullivan says there was an important moment in the game when the Pens’ Kris Letang scored with the man advantage in the third period to make it 5-2.
Sullivan recalled coaching Bryan Rust back in 2015 when he was a fourth-line forward at Wilke-Barre/Scranton. He paid Rust his highest compliment when he said, “He’s a Penguin.”
Rust has scored more hat tricks, six, than any other Penguin since his NHL debut in 2016. He was thrilled to score three in Montreal.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry made 21 saves and was a stalwart in the first two periods against a strong Canadiens’ power play.
The Penguins will travel to Ottawa tomorrow night. They are still seventh in the Metro Division, two points ahead of Columbus, but only one point behind the Rangers and Islanders. They trail the fourth place Flyers by just two points.
