The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County has announced they believe 3% of its water system contains lead service lines.
According to a project that started in 2021, over 2400 lead lines have been confirmed in the water system that serves five counties including a portion of Indiana County. The higher concentration of lead lines are in Apollo and North Apollo in Armstrong County. In Saltsburg, only one line is a lead line, and the authority identified the line as a private line. A bulk of the lines in the community have been identified as non-lead.
Authority officials say the inventory was compiled through data obtained in person by work crews, statistical modeling and reports from property owners. They added that this inventory is only a first step towards eliminating all lead lines in the system.
