The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission is updating its Regional Active Transportation Plan, and is holding a series of public meetings to aid in the effort. One of those meetings will be held this Thursday from 3 to 6 PM at the PA Careerlink location at 300 Indian Springs Road.
The Active Transportation Plan is particularly concerned with developing bicycle and pedestrian programs in roadway, trail, and rail systems within communities. When Indiana County’s Active Transportation Plan was last updated in 2022, projects in their design phase or awaiting funding included a rails-to-trails path from McIntyre to Jacksonville, part of an Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization project, and nearly four miles of trails under consideration for development east of Homer City.
Recent developments include a “reinvigoration” of the PA Walkworks program involving the White Township Recreation Complex.
Thursday’s meeting is facilitated by the Indiana County Office of Planning and Development.
There is another public meeting on transportation this week, and this one is virtual. PennDOT will provide an update on the 2025 State Rail Plan in an online forum on Tuesday from 4 to 5:30 PM. The plan was last revised in 2020 and the update is currently under development.
The plan covers safety passenger and freight rail, funding, policy the environment, and economic development. It will also evaluate and document anticipated passenger and freight needs for the next twenty years.
The meeting will include an interactive question-and-answer session and presentation materials and an online survey will be made available through December 19th. The Zoom link to the meeting and a second link to the Rail Plan and survey are included with this story on our website.
