Pirates’ sensation Paul Skenes is up for two major awards from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. The rookie fireballer was nominated for the NL Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award and NL Cy Young Award last night.
Skenes went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA over 23 starts in his first year. He set a franchise record with 170 strikeouts as a rookie, and he also earned the nod to start for the NL in the All-Star Game this past summer.
San Diego’s Jackson Merril and Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio were the other two finalists for Rookie of the Year, while Atlanta’s Chris Sale and Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler were nominated for the Cy Young Award.
The Rookie of the Year will be named Nov. 18 at 6 p.m., while the Cy Young will be given Nov. 20.
