Penguins goaltender Alex Ndeljkovic summed it up best: ”Their guy was that much better than I was”. Nedeljkovic gave up a goal only 52 seconds into the game and the Penguins ended up losing to the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-1, in Raleigh.
The Pens gave up two goals in each of the first two periods before Blake Lizotte finally scored to make it 4-1 in the third period. Ndeljkovic made only 13 saves on 18 shots while his teammates fired 36 shots at the ‘Canes’ Pyotr Kochetkov.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan says some of his guys let the others down with their lack of effort.
Sullivan says the Penguins put themselves in a hole right from the start of the game.
Ndeljkovic says he and the Penguins have to deal with their disappointment and try harder tonight against the Capitals.
Forward Kevin Hayes missed the game with an undisclosed upper body injury. Sullivan said Hayes is “day to day”. Cody Glass left the game with a facial injury after he was hit by the back of the helmet of Lars Eller in the first period. Bryan Rust remained out of the lineup for the Pens as well.
The Penguins get a shot at redemption tonight as they wrap up their three-game road trip at Washington against the Capitals. Puck drops at 7:30. We’ll join the broadcast after IUP basketball wraps up.
