Penns Manor opened the first round of District 6 playoffs Friday night with a convincing 30-8 victory over Moshannon Valley. The Comets ended the regular season on a four-game losing streak and snapped it in grand style.
Senior running back Troy Williams had 14 carries for 99 yards and one touchdown. Senior quarterback Amin Lieb was effective through the air, completing 9 of 16 pass attempts for 72 yards and one touchdown, while also picking up 57 yards rushing on 15 carries. Dylan Kuzemchack caught six of Lieb’s passes for 50 yards and one touchdown.
But the Comets defense was the story of the night. Kuzemchack intercepted a Brady Mihalko pass and returned it for a touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter. Mihalko, the Black Knights quarterback was limited to just 4 of 14 passing for 39 yards with one interception and was sacked four times. Running back Rocco Reifer, who averaged 145 rushing yards per game in the regular season, was held to just 15 yards rushing on nine carries. The lone touchdown allowed by the Comets was a 91 yard rushing touchdown by Landon Buck with under two minutes left in the game when the Comets had substituted most of their starters.
The Comets advance to play Northern Cambria in the second round next Friday night. Those two teams met in week 7 of the regular season with the Colts picking up a 28-0 win.
