The deadline to register to vote in Tuesday’s election is long past, and the final numbers show a surge in Republican registrations in Pennsylvania, and in Indiana County.
In Indiana County, there are 29,545 registered Republicans and 15,410 Democrats as of yesterday. Democrats have gained 1,387 voters since last year while Republicans have gained 4,084.
The shift in voter registrations is also noted for new voters since 2020 and for those who have switched from Democrat to Republican, and vice versa. After the 2020 election, there were about 630,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans. Now, that margin is about 300,000. 130,000 people who voted as Democrats in 2020 are now registered as Republicans while only 47,000 have switched from republican to Democrat. About 240,000 nonvoters have been removed from Democratic Party rolls and 160,000 from the Republicans.
Among 52,746 total Indiana County registered voters ahead of Tuesday’s General Election, 58 percent are Republicans, 29 percent are Democrats, and 13 percent are “others”.
