While Pitt’s football team is off to a 5-0 start, basketball coach Jeff Capel has begun working out his team in advance of the November 4th season opener against Radford. Capel has been working informally with the Panthers since June, but now that training camp has officially begun, he is getting his first in-depth look at the team he has assembled for this season, his seventh at Pitt.
Two years ago, Pitt appeared to be on the verge of moving on from Capel, but he rebuilt his roster and has won 46 games in the last two seasons. This year he returns guards Ishmael Leggett, Jaland Lowe, and forwards Guillermo and Jorge Diaz Graham, Zack Austin and Papa Kante, who missed last season with a knee injury. He adds transfers Cameron Cohen and Damian Dunn, and European freshman Amsal Delalic, who is currently out with a broken hand.
Capel likes the makeup of this year’s group.
The coach believes he has a group that has embraced the Pitt culture, but it’s only the preseason, and there will be tougher times ahead.
Pitt will play Point Park in an exhibition game on October 22nd.
