Earlier this week, the state senate unanimously approved legislation meant to close a loophole in existing state law concerning the protection of children from sexual predators.
Senate Bill 1317 adds the crime of sexual assault by a sports official, volunteer or employee of a nonprofit organization as a Tier II sexual offense. That means it requires individuals convicted of this crime to register as a sexual offender under the Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act. Currently, that registration is not required.
Senate Republicans have said that the bill is an effort to continue to protect children from sexual offenders. The bill now heads to the State House for consideration.
