The Pirates’ Paul Skenes has been named Baseball America Rookie of the Year. Skenes was 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA, 170 strikeouts and a .198 batting average against in 23 starts and 133 innings pitched in his rookie year.

The Mets and Braves split their doubleheader yesterday, both earning their way into the National League playoffs and squeezing Arizona out of the postseason. New York’s Francisco Lindor launched a two-run ninth-inning home run to give the Mets a dramatic 8-7 win in Game One, after the Braves had scored four runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 7-6 lead. The Braves shut down the Mets bats in the second game, 3-0.
The best-of-three Wild Card rounds begin today with the Mets playing the Brewers and the Braves taking on the Padres in the NL. The Dodgers and Phillies await the first round winners. In the American League, the Astros host the Tigers today and the Royals visit the Orioles. The Yankees and Guardians also have byes.

Baseball’s all-time hit king has died. Pete Rose was found dead yesterday in his Las Vegas home. He was 83. Rose had 4,256 hits in his 24-year career with the Reds, Expos, and Phillies. He was banned from baseball in 1989 after it was determined that he bet on baseball while he was manager of the Reds. Rose attended an autograph show with some of his former teammates in Vegas on Sunday.
