As we get closer to IUP’s Homecoming weekend, police and the sheriff are letting students and businesses know that there will be an increased police presence.
In a joint letter sent by Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl, IUP Police Chief Tim Stringer and Indiana County Sheriff Bob Fyock, students are reminded that as people come in to celebrate, some of them do not share the same sense of community pride and responsibility, and not everyone will have the community’s best interests at heart. They also remind students that rooftop gatherings are prohibited and unsafe, and neighbors cannot avoid being impacted by loud indoor and large outdoor gatherings. They also ask if you see something suspicious, or feel that something isn’t right, report it to police immediately.
In a separate letter, businesses are asked to identify sites that are being approached to host parties or other functions during the weekend. They haven’t received specific information or knowledge on a threat or any unlawful activity, but they want to understand where such gatherings occur, especially ones that may be too big to take place on private property. Businesses that receive requests to host events are asked to get contact information of the person making the request, ask questions that give you confidence that you are being provided accurate information, and then contact police.
The Indiana Area Collaborative Team will meet later today to prepare for Homecoming weekend.
