With IUP’s Homecoming celebration expected to bring thousands of people to the area this weekend, the Indiana Area Collaborative Team met with various stakeholders at the KCAC on Tuesday to discuss safety preparations and alternative events.
Last year’s celebrations took a negative turn when a non-university sanctioned event at the Chevy Chase Community Center resulted in a shooting that killed one person and injured eight others. Lieutenant Christopher Terrana with the state police Troop A barracks said there will be an increased presence this weekend.
Tuesday’s meeting also marked the last one for Indiana County Commissioner Robin Gorman, who has served as I-ACT Co-Chair for several years. She said the group has been beneficial to the community, but it needs to keep growing.
I-ACT Media Representative Michelle Fryling said incident reports will be released Saturday and Sunday mornings. Alternative events are also being offered on-campus. You can find those at iup.edu.
