The U.S. House of representatives has passed a bill that will require institutes of higher education to report hazing incidents as part of its security report.
House Biill 5646, also known as the Stop Campus Hazing act, would require colleges and universities to disclose hazing incidents reported to campus security or local police agencies in its annual security report. Also, the schools must develop and distribute a statement on policy and hazing as part of its annual security report. That statement must include details on the comprehensive program to prevent hazing that must include information on hazing awareness and prevention, and the campus’ current policies on hazing, including procedures that comply with specified collection and reporting requirements.
The bill was co-sponsored by Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson and was passed on the eve of Timothy Piazza’s 27th birthday. He died in February of 2017 at Penn State as a direct result of a hazing ritual at a fraternity.
