Mike Tomlin says Justin Fields will prepare to start his fourth straight game this week at Indianapolis, but he is still not ready to name him number one on the depth chart. Fields has led the Steelers to a 3-0 start while replacing Russell Wilson, who aggravated a calf muscle injury before the first game and is evidently not yet ready to compete for his job.
Tomlin says he doesn’t have to decide today on his starting QB, so he won’t.
The coach says he likes the way Fields approaches the job.
Tomlin says the Steelers’ running game is coming together, and after struggling for three quarters on Sunday against the Chargers, they took control in the fourth.
Tomlin admired the way Broderick Jones rebounded from his rough outing at Denver with a better day against the Chargers, but he wasn’t surprised.
The injury news wasn’t good.
- Edge rusher Alex Highsmith is out for Sunday with a groin injury.
- With an NFL Network report that first round draft choice Troy Fautanu is out for the rest of the regular season with a knee injury, Tomlin said he will get an update on the rookie tackle’s status after practice today. The Steelers made the signing of veteran tackle Calvin Anderson official yesterday.
- Running back Jaylen Warren is expected to be limited at practice today. Warren and guard Isaac Seumalo are questionable for Sunday. Seumalo has not played yet this season.
- Cornerback Cory Trice was placed on injured reserve yesterday and corner James Pierre was added to the active roster from the practice squad.
