Coach Mike Tomlin says Justin Fields is his starter at quarterback this week against the Chargers, and Troy Fautanu is the starting right tackle, with Broderick Jones dropped to second team at both tackle spots in the latest Steelers depth chart. Tomlin held his weekly media conference yesterday. He’ll get the Steelers out on the practice field today to start prepping for the Los Angeles Chargers.
The coach says it’s easy to see why LA is 2-0.
The Steelers were penalized ten times for 78 yards against Denver and Tomlin will bring in league officials to practice today, tomorrow, and Friday. He says the flags are unacceptable.
Fautanu started at right tackle Sunday and Jones came off the bench after having started the previous eleven Steelers games. After he committed three penalties in six plays against the Broncos, Jones found himself on the bench again, but Tomlin says he won’t give up on last year’s top draft pick.
Fields will start his third straight game at quarterback against the Chargers as Russell Wilson still isn’t fully recovered from his calf injury. Tomlin says he’s concerned with who is playing this week, not on any perceived quarterback competition.
Linebacker/special teamer Tyler Matakevich is out at least four weeks with a hamstring injury. He was placed on injured reserve yesterday. Guard Isaac Seumalo may be ready to return this week and wide receiver Roman Wilson could be closer, too. Injuries to tight end MyCole Pruitt and receiver Ben Skowronek are being evaluated.
Former Steelers cornerback James Pierre is back with the team after being cut by Washington at the end of training camp. Pierre and defensive back D’Shawn Jamison were added to the practice squad yesterday and corner Zyon Gilbert and wide receiver Shaquan Davis were dropped.
