Thirty-eight forwards, twenty-five defensemen, and six goaltenders…that’s 69 players crowding the ice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex today for the start of Penguins training camp. Four others, including forward Matt Nieto, are attending camp but are not yet medially cleared to play.
Twenty-five of the guys lacing up the skates for coach Mike Sullivan today played in at least one Penguins game last season.
The Penguins will separate the players into “teams”, with each group scheduled on the ice at a prescribed time. Today, Team 1 and Team 2 will practice from 9 AM to 9:45, with a scrimmage to follow from 10 to 10:45. Team 3 will be on the ice at 11:30 and at 12:40.
The first preseason game will be on Saturday at Buffalo.
