Coach Mike Tomlin says Justin Fields is the Steelers’ likely starter at quarterback for Week Two at Denver, as Russell Wilson does not appear as if he’ll be ready to play on Sunday. Wilson is still feeling the effects of his calf muscle injury.
At his weekly news conference, Tomlin said the team will have more information after today’s first practice of the week. Tomlin says he learned a lot about Fields on Sunday in the win over Atlanta.
The coach did not rule out Wilson playing, but said Fields is more likely to play and he’s preparing for the Broncos with that mindset.
Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. held Falcons’ star wideout Drake London to only 15 yards receiving. Tomlin enjoyed watching that but says Porter will be challenged again this week against the Broncos.
New Steelers Donte Jackson and DeShon Elliott each had an interception on Sunday. Tomlin appreciated their veteran experience in the secondary.
Tomlin said left tackle Dan Moore Jr. has a bad ankle that might impact his availability for this week, and that may open the door for first round draft choice Troy Fautanu to move into the starting lineup. Broderick Jones would move from the right side to the left if Moore can’t go. Injured left guard Isaac Seumalo may be available for Sunday’s game. Cornerback Darius Rush remains in concussion protocol and rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson might have an “uptick” in his work at practice as he works on a bum ankle.
There are 183 names on the NFL’s list of nominees for the Hall of Fame senior class, for players who played before the year 2000. Among them are six former Steelers: Defensive end L.C. Greenwood, linebacker Andy Russell, safety Mike Wagner, running back Byron “Whizzer” White, defensive lineman “Big Daddy” Lipscomb, and kicker Norm Johnston.
The nominees list will be cut to 50 within a few weeks, then to three finalists. A maximum of three will finally be chosen from the combined nominees from the Player, Contributor, and Coach categories.
The Steelers reportedly brought in six punters to work out on Monday. They had so many guys there they had to bring in two long snappers to work out as well before choosing to sign Corliss Waitman to replace injured punter Cam Johnston. Yesterday, they worked out wide receiver Shaquan Davis and cornerbacks Kaleb Hayes, Anthony Johnson, and Cameron McCutcheon, according to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson. They signed Davis to the practice squad and released outside linebacker Marcus Haynes.
