Paul Skenes looked out of sorts to start the game last night, but he used his changeup to get back on track and the Pirates won again in Chicago. Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says Skenes kept his composure and finally found what was working for him after struggling early.
Shelton says Skenes has had to experience at the Major League level what most pitchers go through in the minors.
The Bucs’ skipper admired the work of his pitching staff…and not just Skenes. Colin Holderman, Carmen Mlodzinski, and David Bednar did the job, too.
Third baseman Jared Triolo enjoyed watching how Skenes worked out his problems on the mound.
Triolo says the Pirates’ bullpen shut down the Cubs potent offense.
The Pirates go for the sweep tonight with Domingo Germán (0-0, 6.11 ERA) getting the start against Shota Imanaga (11-3, 3.14 ERA). It’s a 7:15 airtime, 7:40 first pitch on WCCS.
The Pirates claimed left-handed reliever Joey Wentz off waivers from Detroit and will add him to the 40-man roster. That will require designating some other player for assignment, which will happen when Wentz arrives. The Bucs have not said whether or not Wentz will join the big league club. Wentz was DFA’d by the Tigers on Friday after recording a 5.37 ERA over 38 appearances, striking out 60 and walking 27.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona’s six-game winning streak was halted last night by a 5-0 loss to Hartford. The Curve could get only four hits, two each by Sammy Siani and Carter Bins. Emmanuel Chapman gave up four runs in three-and-two-thirds innings and took the loss.
Dominic Perachi will start for the Curve tonight in the series’ second game.
