Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after yesterday’s 24-17 loss to Detroit, “Ready or not, the regular season is coming.” After the performance in a winless preseason, “ready” might not be the best word to describe the Steelers.
But there was progress. They jumped to a 14-0 lead in the Motor City yesterday. Russell Wilson directed the Steelers on a five-play, 60-yard touchdown drive that ended with a 31-yard scoring run by Cordarelle Patterson. After his one series, Wilson was replaced by Justin Fields, who took over after the Steelers recovered a fumbled punt. Fields ran for four yards and threw a 22-yard pass to tight end MyCole Pruitt. Then running back La’Mical Perine scored on a 2-yard run.
Fields played three series and was replaced in the second quarter by Kyle Allen, who led the Steelers to a Matthew Wright field goal in the third quarter. Allen lofted a 59-yard pass to wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick on the drive.
Playing a backup-stocked Steelers defense, the Lions scored twice in the first half to tie the game at 14, and also rebounded after falling behind, 17-14 on Wright’s field goal in the third quarter.
The Steelers will practice Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. They will then enjoy an NFL-mandated four days off.
