Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he hasn’t made up his mind yet on who his starters will be on Saturday at Detroit, and that apparently includes the quarterback, although it’s certain to be Russell Wilson. Tomlin has been treating this week like a regular season game week, with a few exceptions, like saying yesterday that naming starters in the preseason is typically an “11th hour” decision.
The coach says they worked yesterday on specific in-game scenarios.
The Steelers have been underwhelming in their two preseason games, especially on offense. The offensive line has been a major concern, not only with untimely injuries but also with the level of play.
Tomlin says it’s time for the Steelers to step it up.
With Nate Herbig likely out for the season and Zach Frazier stepping into the starting center role, the Steelers have been giving fourth round draft pick Mason McCormick reps at backup center. McCormick is a guard who has played center before. Untested Ryan McCollum is the only other true center on the Steelers’ roster. He’s been with the Steelers since October of 2022, almost exclusively on the practice squad. He’s dressed for one game, in Week 15 last season.
Outside linebacker Markus Golden officially announced his retirement yesterday, twelve days after the Steelers placed him on the reserve/retired list.
