The Pirates outhit the Texas Rangers and had plenty of runners in scoring position, but they couldn’t get them home, and another bad 9th inning did them in against the Rangers. Joe Block recaps the Pirates’ shutout loss.
Manager Derek Shelton was impressed by Domingo Germán’s six scoreless innings.
The Pirates had plenty of chances to push across some runs, but Shelton says they didn’t do the job.
Shelton was baffled by the Pirates’ approach at the plate.
The Pirates are back home to open an important series against an NL Central Division opponent. Paul Skenes [7-2, 2.30 ERA] takes the mound for the Bucs against Reds lefty Nick Lodolo [9-5, 4.55 ERA]. Airtime is 6:15, first pitch at 6:40 on WCCS.
MLB
Legendary Reds first baseman Joey Votto is calling it quits. He announced his retirement yesterday. Votto signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays back in March, but his injury history followed him to Toronto and he never made it back to the big leagues, batting just .165 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 85 at-bats for Syracuse of the International League. He was 0-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday in his final game.
Votto was the 2010 National League MVP. The six-time All-Star hit .297 with 356 home runs over his 17-year career with Cincy.
ALTOONA CURVE
The Bednar brothers didn’t have the best of days yesterday, but at least Will Bednar was on the winning side. David’s little brother was on the mound for an inning of Richmond’s game against Altoona and gave up a two-run home run to Matt Fraizer, but the Flying Squirrels still managed to win the game, 6-3. Nick Dombkowski gave up five runs in three innings to take the loss for the Curve. Abrahan Gutierrez had two of Altoona’s five hits.
Drake Fellows gets the start for the Curve for the third game of the series tonight.
