Mitch Keller dominated the Texas Rangers last night as the Bucs’ right-hander rebounded from a miserable start to his month of August. Joe Block recaps the Pirates’ shutout.

For this afternoon’s series finale in Arlington, Domingo Germán [0-0, 3.00 ERA in his only three games] will make his first start for the Pirates against the Rangers’ Andrew Heaney [4-13, 4.20 ERA]. It’s a 2:10 airtime, 2:35 first pitch on WCCS.
The Pirates may have more pitching help on the way after rehabbing starter Jared Jones threw five shutout innings, giving up just one hit and a walk and striking out ten for Indianapolis in what turned into a 2-1 11-inning loss to Columbus. Jones has been out over a month with a lat muscle strain. He threw 75 pitches in the outing.
The game featured an Indianapolis lineup full of Pirates players on rehab assignments. Reliever Ryan Borucki threw a scoreless sixth inning, Colin Holderman gave up a home run in the seventh, and Carmen Mlodzinski threw a scoreless eighth. Nick Gonzalez played second base and was 1-for-3 at the plate.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona beat Richmond, 7-5, in the opener of a six-game series in Virginia. Kervin Pichardo and Tsung-Che Cheng both hit home runs and Mike Jarvis and Jase Bowen each had two hits. Jack Carey threw 2-and-one-third innings of scoreless relief for the win.
