Things weren’t any better for the Pirates on Wednesday as Mitch Keller’s downward slide continued against a powerful Padres lineup.
Joe Block recaps the Bucs’ 10th-straight loss. (8-2).
The Pirates are off today and return home tomorrow night to host the Seattle Mariners.
On the injury front, rookie Jared Jones gave up five runs, four earned in three-and-one-third innings of his second rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis yesterday afternoon as he continues his return from a grade two right lat strain. He is still on track to return to the Major League club soon.
Reliever Colin Holderman threw a bullpen session before yesterday’s game. He was placed on the 15-day injured list on August 8th with a right wrist sprain. No timetable has been set for his return, but Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said Holderman will throw off the mound next. He could face live hitting soon and Tomczyk adds things are trending in the right direction.
MLB Pipeline released its updated farm system rankings and the Pirates were slotted at No. 20. Bubba Chandler is still listed as the Bucs’ top prospect after Paul Skenes’ graduated from the list earlier this season. This year’s first-round pick Konnor Griffin is the team’s second-best prospect, and Termarr Johnson, Braxton Ashcraft and Thomas Harrington round out the top five, respectively. Nick Yorke and Billy Cook, who the Pirates acquired during this year’s trade deadline, fall into Nos. 6 and 24.
As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Pirates, the MLB Players union is suing the team and Sheetz for their marketing campaign, which includes the use of patches on the left sleeve of jerseys. The MLBPA says the Pirates are not allowed to use three or more players in a promotional campaign without a licensing agreement, and they’re demanding that the team pay monetary damages to players before resuming practices.
Spokeperson Brian Warecki said in a statement that the team was surprised by the complaint as they quote, “have been engaged in active discussions on this matter.”
Sheetz is reviewing the lawsuit.
