A status conference is scheduled today for the case of Ronald Weiss, who is facing a retrial in the death of Barbara Bruzda.
The 76-year-old man was convicted in 1997 for killing Bruzda in 1979 and was sentenced to death, but the verdict was overturned by a federal judge in 2018, based on a ruling of prosecutorial misconduct by the state attorney general’s office. The ruling stated a deputy attorney general and a state trooper lied about promising special treatment to two prison inmates in exchange for their testimony. Weiss was released, but was immediately re-arrested and charges re-filed, with Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco subsequently ruling that the murder and the prosecutorial misconduct were separate issues.
Jury selection in the retrial is scheduled to start November 18th.
