Make it nine straight losses for the Pirates as they dropped the second game of their series in San Diego last night.
Joe Block recaps the 3-0 shutout loss.
The Pirates have one final chance to salvage a win on their West Coast trip this afternoon. RHP Mitch Keller will go for the Pirates. He’s 10-6 with a 3.56 ERA. Opposing him will be former Pirate Martin Perez, who is 2-5 with a 4.78 ERA. It’s a 3:45 airtime, 4:10 first pitch on WCCS.
With last night’s loss, the Pirates are in the midst of the 8th-worst post-All-Star break slide in franchise history at 8-15. The worst mark was back in 1952 when they went 21-53 throughout the final months, followed by 2009 (24-49) and 2022 (23-46). They are now out of Wild Card contention, falling seven games back of Atlanta, who holds the third spot.
ALTOONA CURVE
Things aren’t any better for the Pirates’ Double-A affiliate Altoona, which was shutout, 5-0, by Bowie last night in the first of a six-game homestand. Po-Yu Chen allowed all five runs in three-and-two-thirds innings pitched. Matt Frazier, Abrahan Gutierrez and Tres Gonzales all had two hits, with Fraizer adding a double.
Anthony Solometo (0-4, 6.49 ERA) starts for the Curve in the series’ second game tonight.
