The question of where River Valley football games will be held this year was answered at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
By a 4-to-3 vote, the board approved temporarily holding home games at Ernie Widmar Field until the new athletic complex is ready at the Blairsville campus, which is expected to be September 6th. They also approved a motion to hold practices at the Saltsburg campus for the rest of the week, then have the team practice on the new turf field starting on Monday.
Several community members and one football player — who will remain anonymous — raised concerns on the conditions of Widmar Field, citing divots on the playing surface and lack of parking. Assistant coach Glenn Richards commented on the matter, saying he was not opposed to playing some games at Widmar Field, but the issues need to be fixed in order to keep players safe.
Board President Rick Harper understood the public’s concerns and he said the district’s buildings and grounds employees are working to correct those issues.
Harper also doesn’t expect any issues with parking.
Force Turf Solutions is finishing up electrical work at the new stadium, as well as paving and work on walkways. Meanwhile, Hellas Construction is painting the lines on the new track. Both of those steps should be finished by the end of the week.
