The Pirates’ losing streak extended to eight games after dropping the series opener in San Diego.
Here’s Joe Block.
Manager Derek Shelton said the Pirates have been in several games during their losing streak, but they’ve just been unlucky.
Shelton also commended Jake Woodford for providing six quality innings on the mound.
Game two of the series is tonight. Luis Ortiz pitches for the Pirates. He’s 5-2 with a 3.40 ERA. Michael King will go for San Diego. He’s 9-6 with a 3.34 ERA. It’s a 9:15 airtime, 9:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Marco Gonzales was supposed to the be the Pirates’ starter last night, but the team announced shortly before first pitch that he was placed on the 60-day injured list with a left forearm strain, the same injury that forced him to miss three months earlier this season. Gonzales made just seven starts this year, going 1-1 with a 4.54 ERA.
Ryder Ryan had his contract selected from Triple-A to fill Gonzales’ spot. He was designated for assignment earlier this month.
Outfielder Edward Olivares, who was designated for assignment on Thursday, cleared waivers and was sent outright to Indianapolis. Meanwhile, reliever Josh Walker, whom the Pirates acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline but designated for assignment on Friday, cleared waivers and was released.
