A Kittanning man now faces charges connected with an explosion at Buttermilk Falls in Armstrong County last Thursday.
Zane Clever is in custody at the Armstrong County Jail after his arrest. In their investigation, state police heard from witnesses saying they saw a man acting suspiciously while taking items out of a backpack and taping an unidentified object in the swimming hole near the bottom of the falls before hiding behind a rock. Witnesses also saw a bright flash and heard a loud boom. Troopers found a metal pipe and examined pictures taken by the witnesses. When police confronted Clever, he denied having set off any explosions, but he was detained on an active warrant, and was found to have drugs on his person. A search of his home turned up various “explosive device components” in the basement of his home.
Clever faces nine counts of reckless endangerment, two disorderly conduct counts, and single counts of weapons of mass destruction, making repairs to offensive weapons, possession of drug paraphernalia and of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $50,000. A preliminary hearing is set for August 14th.
