A man involved in a scam in the Homer City area last February is due in court today for a plea hearing.
25-year-old Srinivas Rasala, who has addresses in both New Jersey and Ohio, was charged with theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception and criminal attempt for both crimes connected with an investigation started February 12th in Homer City Borough. State police said the victim had noticed a higher-than-normal charge on her utility bill and accessed a fraudulent website while looking for the company’s phone number. She spoke to someone claiming to be with the refund department and they had her open two other fraudulent websites and her bank accounts. During the incident, the person on the phone said that a payment of $29,700 was deposited in her account in error and she would need to withdraw the money and give it to a courier that would pick it up at 11:30 that night. Police were notified and caught up with the driver, who was later identified as Rasala.
Rasala has been free on $75,000 bail.
