Steelers practice at St. Vincent turned a bit nasty yesterday. After linebacker Elandon Roberts knocked down quarterback Justin Fields, rookie offensive linemen Troy Fautanu and Mason McCormick touched off an offense-vs.-defense dustup that included punches thrown by numerous players.
Coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t overly pleased or upset, and didn’t have much to say about it.
Quarterback Russell Wilson had an interesting fan on the sidelines yesterday. His wife, pop star Ciara, turned up to watch him practice.
Tomlin wasn’t thinking about Ciara, but about Wilson’s role on the field. He was asked by a reporter from Denver, where Wilson played last season if he’s been surprised by anything about Wilson.
TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Isaak Seumalo, and James Daniels all were given the day off. Wide receiver Roman Wilson remained out with an ankle injury, but tight end Rodney Williams returned in a limited capacity.
With Watt not practicing, it elevated second-year outside rusher Nick Herbig to first team.
Tomlin likes the progress Herbig is making, and with Watt out yesterday, the coach also got to see other linebackers step up.
With the injury to Roman Wilson, the Steelers yesterday signed wide receiver Tarik Black, who has been on the practice squads of the Jets, Colts, and Ravens. He’s gotten into one regular season game, with the Jets in 2021.
