The Steelers have the day off today after working over the weekend at training camp in Latrobe.
First round draft choice Troy Fautanu got some first-team reps at right tackle yesterday in place of last year’s top choice, Broderick Jones, who apparently had some sort of minor injury. Jones was in and out of practice and was in discomfort on the sidelines.
Other rookies who got first-team reps yesterday included wide receiver Roman Wilson, linebacker Payton Wilson and guard Mason McCormick, and of course, free agent rookie defensive back Beanie Bishop, who has been working with the starters at nickel/slot.
Coach Mike Tomlin says some of his veterans will be getting extra time off in camp to keep them fresh for the regular season, and to give him a chance to see the youngsters play with the vets.
The Steelers on Saturday named this year’s “Hall of Honor” class, which includes former defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau, linebacker Jason Gildon, nose tackle Casey “Big Snack” Hampton (who is noticeably slimmer since his playing days ended), and running back “Fast” Willie Parker.
Tomlin was asked about Lebeau, who was his defensive coordinator for eleven years in his second stint with the team. He’d coached Gildon in his first go-round with the Steelers, from 1992 to ’96.
The Hall of Honor inductees will be honored with a dinner December 7th and then introduced to Steelers fans before the December 8th game against the Browns at Acrisure Stadium.
