IUP has received $20,000 from the PA Training and Technical Assistance Network that will go towards inspiring the next generation of special education teachers. The university’s “Developing Future Special Educators” program is designed to engage current high school students and undecided IUP undergraduates to learn about and work with students with disabilities.
The program, designed by Dr. William Schleicher, an assistant professor in IUP’s Department of Communication Disorders, Special Education, and Disabilities, will take 25 students in each cohort from Homer-Center, Indiana, River Valley, and West Mifflin school districts. The first cohort will be taken this fall and another will form in the Fall 2025 semester, with each completing two years of programming.
Secondary and post-secondary students in the program will also participate in the Workforce Institute for Navigating Growth and Success, or WINGS, initiative, where they will get real-world experience with special education learners.
