The Indiana Theater will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a special day-long party.
The historic venue started life as a vaudeville house in July of 1924 and was converted into a movie theater four years later. Since then it has served as a venue for live theater, a church and is now a multi-purpose performance theater with the current revitalization starting in 2022. Indiana Theater’s executive director Veldorah Rice said that she and Michael Perry said they realized when the theater’s previous tenant, a church, had left, the building could be revitalized for the community.
A ceremonial ribbon-cutting to commemorate the 100th anniversary will be held at noon today, followed by performances throughout the day both in the theater and in the alley, including several musical performances, magic shows and screenings of two classic films. In the alley, there will also be food trucks, free crafts for kids, face painting and tye-dye booths. All performances and events are free today and open to the public.
