Prospect Development Camp wrapped up for the Penguins yesterday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry with the annual intrasquad tournament. Team 1, led by 2022 first-round pick Owen Pickering, won the Michel Briere trophy with an undefeated run.
While the camp is meant for players to improve their game, Penguins Director of Player Development Tom Kostopolous told reporters that several players brought a competitive edge with them this year. Some were even disappointed that their team didn’t win the tournament, and he alluded that was a good mindset to have at this stage.
Kostopolous said it was a great week at the development camp since he got to meet some of the team’s new faces, whether they were draft picks or free agents.
Kostopolous also commended GM and President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas and the team’s front office for building the team’s prospect pool over the last year.
While several players were busy on the ice, this year’s second-round draft pick Tanner Howe was busy behind the scenes as he signed his three-year, entry-level contract yesterday. The 5-foot-10 forward spent the past season as captain of the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League, where he led the team in games played, goals, assists, and points.
Howe is the first in the team’s draft class to sign his professional contract.
