After being shutout Tuesday night, Milwaukee jumped on Pirates starter Martin Perez early and cruised to a 9-0 shutout of the Bucs last night at American Family Field.
Joe Block reports.
Manager Derek Shelton said Martin Perez left too many pitches over the plate.
The Pirates have not won three or more games in a row in more than two months. Shelton said it’s hard to gain any momentum without going on a winning streak.
The Pirates will send All-Star rookie Paul Skenes to the mound this afternoon to try and win the series. Skenes is 5-0 with a 2.12 ERA. RHP Aaron Civale, who the Brewers acquired from Tampa Bay earlier this week, makes his team debut. He’s 2-6 with a 5.18 ERA. It’s a 1:45 airtime, 2:10 first pitch on WCCS.
It appears Oneil Cruz will not have to be put on the injured list after leaving Monday’s game with a hamstring strain. The Pirates’ shortstop was seen taking part in running and fielding drills yesterday and even dressed for the game. Alika Williams was added to the taxi squad on Tuesday, but several reporters say he was sent back to Indianapolis before yesterday’s game.
With the MLB Trade Deadline nearing at the end of the month, rumors are starting to swirl regarding who the Pirates could add or sell before then. Yesterday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Pirates have inquired about Angels outfielder Taylor Ward, along with several other players, however a deal is not imminent.
Ward is hitting .235 with 14 home runs in 89 games played this season with Los Angeles.

The field for the Home Run Derby is set. Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers and Teoscar Hernandez of the Los Angeles Dodgers were announced as the final two competitors in the eight-player field yesterday. Garcia was knocked out in the first-round last year, while Hernandez is set to make his derby debut. Two-time champion Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm, Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson, Atlanta’s Marcell Ozuna, Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez and Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. are the other players set to compete for the derby crown.
