The S.W. Jack Drillers won a thriller last night at First Commonwealth Bank Field in Homer City, coming back from a five-run deficit to beat Marion Center, 14-10, and claiming their second straight Indiana County Youth Legion championship.
The Drillers carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the fourth before Tyler Mellott walked in the tying run and Troy Slovinsky put Marion Center on top with a run-scoring fielder’s choice. S.W. Jack then sprung for four runs in the top of the fifth on a Riley George sacrifice fly, and two singles by Shane McHugh and Jamison Miller.
Marion Center then flipped the game on its head by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the frame, headlined by a Jaxon Davis double that scored three runs. The Drillers then answered with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to three and seven runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good.
Gage Wingard helped S.W. Jack on the mound with two-and-one-third innings of scoreless relief.
The Drillers also got help from the bottom of the order as Peyton Mamros collected three hits, all singles, and had two runs scored. McHugh and Will Olsen combined for four hits and three RBIs. Dylan Shank added a double.
Drillers coach Mitch Pacconi said his team never quit and worked hard to complete the comeback win.
Pacconi said he expected a close game after his team pulled off a ten-run win the night before.
Cole Adamson led Marion Center hitters with two hits while Jaxon Davis added three RBIs. As a team, Marion Center worked 11 walks against S.W. Jack pitchers.
With the win, S.W. Jack punched their ticket to the Western Regional Tournament, which takes place July 27-31 at First Commonwealth Bank Field. Two other teams in the tournament are Wesleyville and Titusville, making its first appearance.
