The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County announced yesterday that they were victims of a vendor impersonator scheme.
Representatives with the company said the alleged theft was discovered last week. The scam did not involve customers records or data, nor did it involve any infrastructure related to the authority’s operations. Customers are not expected to be affected by the theft, and officials say the theft will not impact the company’s financial security.
Few details on the theft have been released, but the company says they are cooperating with federal investigators and its insurance company. They also said that the FBI asked them to not release how much money was taken in the theft.
The Authority sells water to over 120,000 customers in Westmoreland, Indiana, Armstrong, Fayette and Allegheny Counties, along with providing sewer services to over 30,000 customers.
