Pitt football legend Bobby Grier passed away June 30th at the age of 91.
Grier was a trailblazer for the program, and the game of football itself. He lettered for Pitt from 1953-55 and made national headlines in December 1955 after becoming the first African American football player to appear in the Sugar Bowl. While the Panthers lost to Georgia Tech, 7-0, Grier’s appearance broke the color barrier for one of college football’s biggest postseason games.
Grier led the team in interceptions in 1955 and was elected to the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.
