The Pirates and Cardinals played extra innings for the second straight game but this time, it was St. Louis that came out on top. Joe Block has the story.
The seven-game homestand continues tonight with a weekend wrap-around series against the New York Mets. The Pirates will send rookie sensation Paul Skenes [4-0, 2.06 ERA] to the mound to face Mets righty Luis Severino [5-2, 3.42 ERA]. It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Manager Derek Shelton says Martín Perez gave him the kind of start the Pirates needed, especially with a tired bullpen.
Martín Perez credits his great start to some extra work he did between starts.
Jared Jones did not think his lat muscle soreness was serious, but the Pirates put the rookie right-hander on the 15-day injured list yesterday. Jones left Wednesday’s start after five innings when he felt some discomfort. While he’s out for at least 15 days, it may take some more time to get back to form, so it could mean a rehab start.
To replace Jones on the Major League roster, the Pirates recalled outfielder Joshua Palacios from Indianapolis. He dealt with illness and injury for much of this season, but after rehabbing in Class A, he returned to Indy on June 11th, and in 21 games since then, he hit .311 with a home run and eight RBIs. Palacios pinch hit for Yasmani Grandal in the 8th inning yesterday and drew a walk.
After a pause in his rehab from a concussion, Henry Davis returned with a rehab start for Indianapolis yesterday and looked quite different from his first rehab stint at Altoona. For the Curve, he was 0-for-6 with five strikeouts. Last night, he had two hits in a 5-3 Indy win over Louisville.
