The Indiana County Transit Authority has announced a new contactless fare collection system that will be put in place soon.
The new system will allow passengers to use a mobile-ticketing platform where they can tap a credit or debit card when boarding to pay their fares. A free app will also be part of the first rollout of the new system. In a news release, IndiGo Executive Director John Kanyan said that once the system is fully in place, people will be able to use their credit card for fare payment, and if they tap their card three times, they will purchase a day pass that will allow them unlimited rides for the rest of the day without paying additional fees.
The system from Modeshift is meant to help streamline the ticketing process. Some of the key features include a free app for Apple and Android devices to plan trips and pay fares, reloadable smart cards, a website to help with trip planning and fare purchase, a smart pay account to manage smart cards, and will also allow for real-time data collection to help IndiGo optimize operations.
Before things are put in place, IndiGo plans an extensive rider information and education campaign to familiarize people with the new system. It is expected to be in place by the end of the year.
