The Pirates have played two series in two weeks against the Cincinnati Reds, and yesterday’s win gave them two out of three both times. Here’s Joe Block.
Manager Derek Shelton admired the fight the Pirates showed in bouncing back from Monday’s loss to take the next two.
Shelton used Luis Ortiz as his opener because he’d used Carmen Mlodzinski the night before, and Ortiz dominated the Reds.
The Bucs’ skipper says Ortiz fits perfectly in whatever role he is asked to fill.
Rowdy Tellez has finally found his swing and Shelton says the first baseman is proving to be a key run producer.
Tellez is hitting .362 in the month of June with two home runs, five doubles, and 12 RBIs.
Bryan Reynolds singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 23 games.
The Pirates are off today and start a three-game series at Atlanta tomorrow night. They’ve not announced their pitching plan yet as Martín Perez rejoins the rotation, but he is expected to get a start, either pushing Jared Jones back a day and throwing tomorrow night, or pitching Saturday with Jones going tomorrow night and Paul Skenes on Sunday.
The Pirates assigned catcher Henry Davis to Altoona to begin his rehab from a concussion. With Joey Bart already rehabbing from his thumb injury at Indianapolis, Davis will get more regular at-bats with the Curve. He was 0-for-2 with a strikeout and two walks last night.
Pitcher Quinn Priester began a rehab assignment with Indianapolis, and was scheduled to start against Rochester last night, but the game was rained out. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.
ALTOONA CURVE
Yoyner Fajardo and Charles McAdoo both had three hits but the Altoona bullpen gave up five runs in the 9th inning and the Curve lost to Akron, 11-6. Dustin Peterson and Kervin Pichardo both had two hits for the Curve. Eddy Yean was hit hard in the 9th, giving up four of the five Akron runs to take the loss.
The Curve have lost two straight games to start the second half of the season. Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Bubba Chandler starts for Altoona tonight.
